Depressor Septi Nasi
Posted on 30th Jul 2020 / Published in: Face
General information
The depressor septi nasi is one of three separate nasal muscles.
Literal meaning
The muscle that presses the partition of the nose down.
Interesting information
This muscle has more than one action, being responsible for constricting the nostrils as well as assisting in flaring the nostrils when deep breaths through the nose are taken.
Origin
Maxilla above the central incisor.
Insertion
Cartilaginous nasal septum.
Function
Works with the alar part of the nasalis to widen the nasal openings.
Nerve supply
Facial nerve (Cranial nerve VII).
Blood supply
Lateral nasal and septal branches of the facial artery.

Relevant research
A hyperactivated depressor septi nasi is an important factor contributing to nasal tip drooping and is corrected through surgical interventions using an intranasal approach.

Depressor septi nasi exercises
Use your finger to close one nostril and try to flare the other one. Swap over and repeat on the other side.

Depressor Septi Nasi: The Small Muscle That Pulls the Nose Down
The depressor septi nasi is a thin, often overlooked facial muscle located at the base of the nose, connecting the nasal septum to the upper lip. Despite its size, it plays a noticeable role in facial expression and nasal dynamics—especially when you smile.
This muscle is responsible for pulling the nasal tip downward and slightly widening the nostrils during certain lip movements. When overactive or unbalanced, it can subtly distort the harmony between the nose, philtrum, and upper lip—especially in aging or high-expressing faces.

Anatomy & Function
- Origin: Incisive fossa of the maxilla, just above the upper central incisors
- Insertion: Underside of the nasal septum and alar cartilage (nasal tip)
- Function:
- Pulls the nasal tip downward during smiling or talking
- Slightly flares the nostrils
- Coordinates with the orbicularis oris and levator labii superioris during upper lip movement
- Nerve Supply: Buccal branch of the facial nerve (CN VII)
- Synergistic Muscles: Orbicularis oris, nasalis, levator labii superioris
The Problem: Overactivity, Aging, and Structural Weakness
As the maxilla resorbs with age and the midface muscles weaken, the depressor septi nasi can become hyperactive, creating:
- A drooping nasal tip when smiling (often called a “smiling nose”)
- Increased nostril flare or asymmetry
- Flattening or tension in the upper lip area
- Distortion of the nasal-lip balance, contributing to a prematurely aged or imbalanced look
The result is a smile that unintentionally pulls the nose downward, creating an overworked or tense appearance around the center of the face.
The ISO Metrik Device: Rebalancing the Lip-Nose Connection
While the ISO Metrik Device does not directly train the depressor septi nasi, it restores muscular harmony in the upper lip and midface, helping to stabilize the muscle’s overactivity and support the skeletal foundation (maxilla) it depends on.
How It Helps:
- Strengthens the orbicularis oris and levator labii superioris, which work in opposition to the depressor septi nasi
- Provides resistance-based training that retrains upper lip movement and coordination
- Reinforces the maxilla through intraoral bite pressure, improving support for the muscle’s origin point
- Reduces downward drag on the nasal tip by elevating surrounding soft tissue and facial tone
With consistent use, the device helps restore the balance between nasal motion and lip elevation, reducing exaggerated nose movement and improving upper face aesthetics.
Why the Depressor Septi Nasi Matters
When this small muscle is unbalanced, the entire nose-lip dynamic can shift, disrupting facial symmetry and creating subtle—but noticeable—aging patterns. Rebalancing the depressor septi nasi through midface support and muscular coordination is key to restoring a cleaner smile and nasal profile.
The ISO Metrik Device does this naturally—by engaging the upper lip system, supporting the maxilla, and allowing the depressor septi nasi to return to its proper role in facial expression.
